An adjustable stair gate is useful only if its specified range actually matches your installation. “Adjustable” is not a safety standard and it does not mean a gate can be stretched beyond its listed dimensions.
Check the width range
Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and are 33 inches tall. Measure at the actual mounting points and follow the instructions supplied with the gate.
Measure the mounting points
Walls and banisters may not be parallel, and trim can change the usable span. Measure where the gate will attach rather than relying on the nominal width of the stair opening.
Do not improvise extensions
If an opening exceeds the gate's specified range, use a product designed for that span instead of modifying the gate.
