Awkward stairs are difficult to gate because width is only one part of the problem. Angled approaches, offset walls, trim and banisters can change the actual mounting geometry.
Measure the real attachment points
Measure where the product would actually attach, not simply the widest visible part of the opening. Note baseboards, molding, posts and any difference in alignment between the two sides.
Identify the configuration
Is it wall-to-wall, wall-to-banister, banister-to-banister or an angled opening? Do not assume that a gate compatible with a standard doorway is automatically compatible with a banister or offset installation.
Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and are 33 inches tall. Measure at the actual mounting points and follow the instructions supplied with the gate.
Do not improvise mounting
If the product instructions do not support your specific surfaces or geometry, choose a solution designed for that configuration rather than adapting hardware on your own.
Think about the opening when the gate is not in use
A retractable design can reduce the amount of barrier left in the walkway, but fit and approved installation come first.
