A banister changes the installation problem. Posts can be round, square, tapered or decorative, and the surface opposite the banister may not line up cleanly.
Wall to banister
Measure between the intended attachment points and note the shape of the banister, nearby trim and any offset between the two sides.
Banister to banister
With posts on both sides, compatibility depends on the specific product and its approved mounting method. Do not assume a standard wall-mounted gate can be adapted safely.
Protecting the wood is not the only consideration
A no-drill solution can be attractive for finished woodwork, but the gate still needs to be designed and tested for that mounting configuration. Avoid improvised straps, adapters or hardware unless they are specifically approved for the product.
Know the size range
Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and are 33 inches tall. Measure at the actual mounting points and follow the instructions supplied with the gate.
If your staircase needs a specialized banister solution
Choose a product specifically designed for the banister configuration rather than forcing a standard installation. Correct fit and approved installation should come before appearance.
