Wide stair openings can be difficult to gate because the usable span is often different from the obvious wall-to-wall measurement. Banisters, trim, offset walls and open-plan layouts all affect where a gate can actually mount.
What counts as a wide opening?
Instead of relying on a generic “extra-wide” label, compare your measured installation span with the product's specified range. Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and stand 33 inches tall.
Measure where the hardware will attach
Measure at the intended mounting points. If one side is a banister, measure to that attachment point rather than to a nearby wall. Account for baseboards, molding and offsets that may change the usable span.
Wide and awkward are not the same thing
A 50-inch opening with two aligned mounting surfaces can be simpler than a narrower opening with an angled banister. If the sides do not line up conventionally, read our baby gate for awkward stairs guide.
Why retractable design helps in wider traffic areas
A rigid swing panel needs clearance when open. A retractable fabric gate rolls to the side, leaving the walkway open when the barrier is not in use. This can be particularly useful in wider transitions between living spaces.
Check the tested use
Crafted Gates are hardware-mounted and intended for children ages 6–24 months and pets. They have been tested by Bureau Veritas to ASTM F1004-22 and 16 CFR 1239. Always install and use the gate according to the supplied instructions.
Choose material after confirming fit
Once the opening and installation are confirmed, compare the available performance fabrics. Crypton® is designed for indoor performance, while Milliken® and InsideOut® provide indoor/outdoor options.
Shop Crafted Gates and compare fabrics and finishes for openings up to 55 inches wide.
