Retractable and swing baby gates solve the same basic problem in very different ways. The best choice depends on your opening, the available mounting surfaces, how people move through the space and the product's tested use.
Retractable gates: clear the walkway when open
A retractable gate uses a flexible barrier that rolls to the side when it is not needed. That makes it especially useful where a rigid door panel would interfere with a hallway, landing or open living area.
Swing gates: a rigid panel and hinge path
A traditional swing gate uses a rigid panel that opens on hinges. The design may feel familiar, but you need enough clearance for the panel and must consider where it sits when open.
Compare mounting before style
Regardless of design, installation is fundamental. Crafted Gates are hardware-mounted and include mounting hardware and installation instructions. They have been tested by Bureau Veritas to ASTM F1004-22 and 16 CFR 1239.
Measure the actual opening
Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and are 33 inches tall. Measure at the intended attachment points, accounting for trim, baseboards and banisters.
Where retractable fabric has an advantage
For design-focused interiors, fabric can soften the visual impact of a safety barrier. Crafted Gates offers Crypton®, Milliken®, InsideOut® and Oil Waxed Canvas options for different environments and use cases.
Which should you choose?
Choose based on the installation location and the manufacturer's instructions first. Then compare walkway clearance, dimensions, material performance and appearance. If your staircase includes banisters or unusual angles, see our awkward stairs guide.
