A secure retractable baby gate installation starts before the first piece of hardware goes on the wall. The most important steps are confirming that the gate is appropriate for the location, measuring the actual mounting span, identifying the surfaces on both sides of the opening, and following the installation instructions supplied with your gate.
Know the product before you install
Crafted Gates are hardware-mounted safety gates intended for children ages 6 to 24 months and pets. They fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide and stand 33 inches tall. The gates have been tested by Bureau Veritas to ASTM F1004-22 and 16 CFR 1239.
Step 1: Identify the opening
Determine whether your installation involves standard walls, a wall and banister, two banisters, or an angled/offset opening. Do not assume that instructions for one configuration apply to another.

Step 2: Measure at the mounting points
Measure the width where the gate hardware will actually attach. Baseboards, molding, posts and railings can change the usable span. Confirm that the measured opening falls within the gate's specified 27.6–55 inch range.
Step 3: Inspect the mounting surfaces
Identify the material and shape of each mounting surface before beginning. Use the hardware and installation method specified in the instructions for your exact gate configuration. Do not substitute an improvised mounting method.
Step 4: Follow the supplied installation instructions
The product instructions—not a general blog article—are the authoritative step-by-step guide for bracket placement, hardware use and final setup. Install all required parts exactly as directed.
Step 5: Inspect the gate before use
After installation, verify that all required hardware is secure and that the gate operates as described in the instructions. Stop using the gate if any part is damaged, broken or disassembled, or if a child is able to climb over or dislodge it.

Never use a safety gate to keep a child away from a pool. Continue to follow all warnings and use instructions supplied with the product.
