Open-concept homes create a specific gate problem: the spaces you want to separate often do not have a standard doorway, and a permanent-looking barrier can interrupt the room visually.
Start by defining the boundary
Decide exactly where the protected zone begins and ends. Then identify two compatible mounting points rather than choosing a location based only on where the room appears to transition.
Measure the span
Crafted Gates fit openings from 27.6 to 55 inches wide. If the span exceeds 55 inches, choose a product specifically designed for the larger opening rather than improvising an extension.
Why retractable works well in open plans
When the barrier is not needed, the fabric retracts to the side instead of leaving a rigid panel across the transition. That helps preserve the open feel that made the floor plan appealing in the first place.
Use fabric to connect the gate to the room
Crypton® performance fabric can coordinate with indoor upholstery, while Milliken® and InsideOut® can support spaces that transition toward patios or other indoor/outdoor areas.
Keep safety requirements primary
Crafted Gates are intended for children ages 6–24 months and pets and have been tested by Bureau Veritas to ASTM F1004-22 and 16 CFR 1239. Follow the product instructions for the specific installation.
